The Importance of Keywords

Keywords are one of the backbones of good sites, and using keywords well is essential to monetizing any site for bloggers.  Keywords are not just important for getting traffic to come onto the site, but are also important for attracting advertisers.

Keywords in posts should be relevant to the content of the post in question.  Important keywords that are extremely relevant should appear a number of times, but it might also be beneficial to include a number of secondary keywords in the post.  Having secondary keywords means that a page may rank when a  user searches for something similar, and may also help you to get traffic from unexpected sources.

One important thing to avoid is keyword stuffing, where the same keyword for the post is repeated over and over.  Search engines can recognise this and may penalise sites that engage in this behaviour.

While keyword optimisation is one of the main SEO techniques, it may soon come under threat in its current form.  Recent Google updates have allowed SSL encryption for text searches, and it is speculated that this method of search will be rolled out for all search tools.  SSL means that third parties cannot access search data, so sites will no longer be able to optimise for keyword searches as easily, as keyword collectors will not be available.

This means that it may be useful to think like a user when using keywords on a site, try and play to your sites’ strengths and not to artificially rank for keywords that may be popular.
